$50 MILLION AVAILABLE FOR YOUR SCHOOLS ACCESS CONTROL SOLUTIONS

November 6, 2024

The state of Arkansas is investing another $50 million in statewide grants to school districts to improve security as school shooting incidents and threats continue to increase. Access Control is the top priority. Arkansas Public Safety Solutions is here to help you fix and improve your school's security.

Secure Your Schools

The Department of Education has created a list of school safety grant priorities. APSS can help with priorities such as electronic access control for exterior doors, shot detection technology, and much more.

SEE HOW APSS CAN HELP YOUR SCHOOL CAMPUS

Priority 1

  1. Electronic access controls for high-frequency-use exterior doors.
  2. Visitor management system for school campuses.
  3. Covers for vision panels on classroom doors that prevent viewing into the classroom and allow students a blind area to 'hide' during a lockdown.
  4. Locks for all classroom doors so that doors can be locked from the inside, allow outside access by authorized personnel, and allow for egress.
  5. Numbers on classroom interior and exterior surfaces (wall, door, or window) easily identifiable to first responders so that they can reference the position of students and/or intruders.
  6. Intercom/communication system that allows two-way communication between staff across the district.
  7. Touch bar exit devices to replace crash bar exterior door egress hardware, including replacement of door handles if necessary.
  8. District campuses should have fencing that limits access to the school entrances, especially the main entrance

Priority 2

  1. Security cameras for school campuses; must be accessible only by designated individuals and law enforcement.
  2. A grand master key system for the school district, ensuring that each campus has a master key available.
  3. District master keys to be provided/accessible to local law enforcement for use during a critical incident.
  4. Shatter resistant film or other reinforcement for glass/windows to prevent access into a classroom and the main entrance.
  5. Safety measures for buses and transportation (communication, cameras, etc.).
  6. Visible signage on school campuses to clearly identify visitor requirements, closed campus areas, and traffic flow.
  7. Modifications to establish a single secure visitor point of entrance, ideally with a secured vestibule, when allowable.

Priority 3 - Additional Safety Considerations

  1. Physical barriers to prevent access, including bollards, landscaping, fencing, low walls, etc., especially at the main school entrance.
  2. Software or other mechanisms to monitor communication platforms, on school owned devices, to include social media outlets as it relates to threats or triggering phrases used by potential active attack suspects.
  3. Weapon-detection equipment/system(s)
  4. Shot-detection equipment/system(s)
  5. Door-prop alarms
  6. First-aid materials and equipment
  7. Radios compatible with AWIN system
